Yesterday was one of those rare days where I got home and my mailbox was packed with 5 glossy new mags. In the mix was the latest edition of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles which had a little sumthin' special in the back--a look at Kevin & Lee Kleinhelter's new office space. I. AM. IN. LOVE. Chic, modern, & clean, it's classic Lee that makes you just want to sit down at that desk and do something.

I'm lucky enough to not only know Brian Patrick Flynn of Decor Demon, but I get to call him boss too. To all of you who love his work, yes--he is as fabulous in real life as he is in print!
A few months back Brian, generous heart that he is, volunteered his time to partner with TeachersCount, a nonprofit organization that serves to create a culture of appreciation for teachers throughout the US. TeachersCount was awarded a grant by the Staples Foundation, and Brian volunteered to make over a Rhode Island teacher's lounge on only $7,000. You might think that's a lot of dough, but wait until you see the space he was working with. His design was so stunning, it was even featured in this New York Times article a few days ago. He took one of the lounges from this . . . .

on that tiny budget, with a whole lotta goodness in-between. And oh yeah, I forgot to mention that he did it all via TEXT MESSAGE with the teachers--he never set foot in the space until install day! I would be surprised, but then again, this is the same guy that thinks of stuff like this
and doesn't even have to put the concept down on paper. Brian also recently joined the HGTV Design Happens team, which means you'll get to read his insightful & beautiful posts featuring gender-balanced designs on a weekly basis. He has an amazing (and super sweet) photographer named Sarah Dorio, which means that all of his photos are newsstand (and not to mention drool) worthy. Brian is brilliant, funny, kind, easy on the eyes, and trust me, you need to see his portfolio. I'm so proud to know this guy!!

One of the central components of my office makeover is a large bulletin board that I can use for keeping inspiration pieces, business goals, and school deadlines in the forefront of my daily activities. I decided early on that I'd make a bulletin board but wanted something with a lot of detail on the frame, or at least a substantial amount of moulding. Using an ornate frame I found from a local thrift store,
I started making one using a remnant frame from a large art piece. Halfway thru, I realized that it still wasn't quite big enough for the area in question, so I started my search again. When I ran across this one at Home Goods, my heart sang with pure joy!!!
It can only be described by one word, and that word would be MASSIVE. This thing measures 55" x 39.5", and while it's not quite as big as this one from Ballard Designs,
it's definitely a rival and was only $60--slightly more than 10% of the BD price--score! The size of the actual corkboard and the thick moulding (about 4") were just what I had in mind to visually anchor my desk to the wall. After a quick coat of white paint (the frame was originally creme), a layer of polyurethane, and a little bit of bling, here's my finished product.
Sorry I can't show you a wider view, but there's still a bit of work that needs to be done before the total reveal. Because my desk is a bit narrow, the board will be mounted to the wall sometime this week, then I'll be off to search for a new window treatment and closet storage/shelving. For now, I'm basking in the glory of this massive bulletin board--I'm in love.

I've been planning on organizing my office for quite awhile, but the last few months of school made it nearly impossible to get anything of substance done. I have a laundry list of projects/goals that I need to get done including adding shelving to the closet (to hold the majority of my books & magazines), painting the top 1.5 inches of the wall (thought I would be installing crown moulding, but it doesn't look like it . . . ), and sourcing and refinishing a new (to me) desk & chair. Well I found and finished the desk, and recently finished a dining chair I've repurposed as an office chair. Here's the before:
I chose this chair because it was in excellent condition and had just the lines I was looking for! I wanted something with a straighter back (to provide support while I'm toiling away at my desk) and yet still have classically feminine lines.
My favorite details are the fluted legs and the scalloped back, and if I had to guess, I would say this chair is what I imagine a modern Sheraton chair to look like (if you added leg stretchers), but unfortunately I have no clue where/who it's from! Regardless of its origin, for only $12, this fit the bill perfectly.
After a quick application of primer, I sprayed the chair a bright, glossy white and decided to use Kravet's Sommers fabric in the Atlantic colorway.
I love the modern print, and the variations of blue in the fabric are the perfect complement to my wall color (think Benjamin Moore's Brittany Blue). After adding additional batting and reattaching the cushion, here's a look at my completed chair.

As I'm slowly (but surely!) making progress on my home office, I'm dreaming of a space that's clean, clutter-free, and packed to the rafters with creative images. In this room I see the story of a successful designer who's in the midst of planing several projects inspired by exotic locales and the love of family and friends. I use it to stay inspired and focused in my career. I'd love to know--what inspires your life???

This process ended up taking a bit longer than I expected, but I couldn't be happier with the results. One benefit to the extra time is that the desk has been allowed to fully cure, so I know it's now ready for the furious scribbling of all my ideas and late night typing sessions. Here's where it started.

The transformation for this piece required some cleaning, wood putty, and a few layers of primer, paint, and urethane. This, of course, is in addition to the Brasso for the hardware.
It wasn't as bright as I would've liked this afternoon, so I had to use the flash on my camera which cast some funky shadows. Don't worry--the walls in my office are not baby blue. In reality, they're more of a blueish-grey, and it makes for a great place to read and study. I have another project I've been working on for above the desk, so hopefully I'll be able to get it done and blog about it next week. My office makeover is far from finished, but I'm on my way!
