My eldest son's birthday, so was woken by Gill asking me to wake up as he wanted to open his present from us, which was, as requested, a radio-controlled tarantula which he'd seen in the Anti-Gravity shop. So he wasn't surprised but was happy... I fitted the batteries and they both played quite happily with it for a while.

The post came and it was the latest edition of the Community Composting Network's magazine 'The Growing Heap' which I proceeded to read cover to cover... it's always riveting and never long enough! Their AGM is in a few weeks and once again it's on a weekend when I'm working, such a drag. I would REALLY love to attend this event sometime but it won't be this year, as I'm in Preston entertaining new recruits to the University.

During the day I got an email from an American email discussion list called 'Compost Digest' which I subscribe to (managed by the US Composting Council) and there was a message with a link to this, saying that the first sentence was just the best first sentence in any piece introducing composting:
http://www.grist.org/advice/how/2008/08/19/?source=most_popular and I totally agree!
If you want to subscribe to Compost Digest, send an email message with subject or body 'help' to compost-request@mailman.cloudnet.com or, via the web:

Our birthday boy had a visitor, a lad in the year below him, but less than a year younger and they get on very well (as we do with his parents!) and the three of them spent the whole day playing happily, and they had a late tea after which the birthday boy and I cycled him back home, picking up a good pile of logs on the way from the usual free logpile place, now seriously depleted!

I did some chainsawing today in an attempt to try and tidy up the front garden. Also, when I logged into Facebook, found that Scrabulous had gone... the owners of Scrabble have finally got to the UK Facebook users, so I spent some time posting various bits and bobs on the several pages devoted to saving Scrabulous, and sent an email to Mattel the UK owners.

Late in the evening Gill and I had a good game of Scrabble... on the board, not on our laptops (there are several online versions, but not on Facebook) and fairly predictably, I won. Gill says it's because I've been getting loads of practice with Scrabulous... but no more...

Quite a good day.... my eldest went to his last day at Able, Gifted and Talented, this time at the University. I went to town to do some paper shuffling at the bank, as we are doing a SUMA order tomorrow. We have to pay the delivery person on the day, so any cheques we get have to be paid into the account beforehand.

A busy afternoon too, and in the evening the Friends of St Nicholas Fields AGM, which was preceeded by an intro to York in Transition by Barry and Edward which was good, once again seeing the stuff presented in another format.

Found that Scrabulous on Facebook is now back on... for non-US folks at least. This is good!

I took my eldest to one of his friends' house by bike where his mum took them both to the Gifted and Talented Summer School. I cycled his bike back via school where I watered the plants in the 'Green Thumbs' planters.

Later in the morning I cycled to town to pay in a cheque and give the Green Fest insurance documents to Baz who was at work as I am unable to attend the meeting tomorrow night, and he needs them for that meeting.

I came back via Country Fresh and picked up lots more compostables, then lunch, then garden.

Had a visit from Mike, who made the little film about the 'Big Freeze' http://www.vimeo.com/1397032 in which I have a speaking part (after the Freeze!)
and he had a tour of the garden and we chatted about future possible films including the Green Festival.

I enjoy using Facebook and have been playing Scrabble on it, as 'Scrabulous'. However I became aware that the owners of Scrabble have been upset at this online version, and yesterday, one of my US playing partners told me that the application had been deleted for US and Canadian users... and today it was removed from Facebook totally. However, there is a page for Scrabulous fans:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4772916593

and an online petition to ask Hasbro to allow Scrabulous to continue:
http://www.petitiononline.com/1927612/petition.html

So no online Scrabble tonight!

Leisurely morning, several phone calls including a Fiddlesticks booking, and some time playing Scrabulous on Facebook!

Gill went to Art and came back for lunch, and we had a reasonably relaxing afternoon, although didn't get a lot done apart from washing up.

I went to pick up the boys at 3 and we were ok until one of them rode through some discarded yoghurt that had been left on the field. It flicked up onto his bike which made him very angry, and he had a huge paddy and ran off into the church grounds for about 10 minutes, after which I called to him to come home. He grudgingly came and got on his bike, but as he set off one of his classmates overtook him on her bike, and this set his anger off again, and he shouted at her. I wanted to apologise to the girl and her mum, but my son was now dawdling so I couldn't go on ahead and speak to the aggrieved person.

We did eventually get home, and I had offered to go to the shop after coming back so I cycled off down Heslington Road to Country Fresh, to buy veg, fruit and pick up compostables. When I got back my son immediately came to me and apologised; I told him I loved him regardless. He then went upstairs and Gill took me into the back room and said that she hadn't told me as soon as I'd come in the door that our little boy whom we love so much had just attacked her and thrown my laptop onto the floor in his anger. Gill was very upset and hurt. She told me to see if my computer was working or if the impact had damaged it. When I switched on there was a thick vertical white line or bar on the right of the screen. This persisted through all the windows opening and obscures part of the screen. I am able to use the computer, but I have to move the windows over to the left of the screen to be able to do what I do.

I ate tea quietly, feeling shaken by his behaviour, and the damage to my property, and didn't know whether to say anything to him. After tea I went to the GreenSpeak meeting at Priory St, which was about 'Peak Oil' presented by Andy Chase, who's our candidate in the next General Election. Peak Oil is a very interesting subject, pretty complicated, but I took notes and participated in the discussion afterwards.

Home before 10, did a little bit of gardening before it got dark. Came in to chat with Gill, and she told me about a couple of phone calls... one from my folks about my sister-in-law's dad who's died, and one from my friend Ali in Sheffield who's fallen out of her wheelchair and been to A+E, and is feeling very bruised. Then watched a bit of telly, and then went on the computer to do my blog and chat with K on Skype.
